Random Acts of Caring can happen anywhere, anytime. No one will know when, where or how Rent-A-Center will make a difference in a group of people's lives. In 2008, cities throughout Ohio and New York benefitted from surprise donations of merchandise and money. We are expanding this program to other states in 2009.
NEW YORK
• Elmira - Went door-to-door providing 400 families with $50 credits on their NYSEG home heating bills.
• Rochester - Handed out 10,000 bus passes in to assist individuals and community groups with mass transportation needs.
• Albany, Schenectady and Troy - Provided $30 gas gift cards to hundreds of community volunteers to say "thank you" during National Volunteer Appreciation Week.
• Harlem - Furnished three nurses' lounges at Harlem Hospital Center in honor of National Nurses' Appreciation Day and provided meals for the nursing staff.
• Brooklyn – Gave residents two tickets to a Brooklyn Cyclones game and donated $1,300 to Camp Brooklyn to help sponsor children at camp.
• Syracuse - Treated underprivileged kids from the Syracuse SW Community Center to a night at the ball park, including a picnic, baseball game and fireworks.
• Plattsburgh - Gave $100 credits toward books to 120 students in the nursing program at Clinton Community College.
• Buffalo – Contributed $15,000 in scholarships, two laptop computers and $10 gift cards for each of 500 children in Mayor Brown's Summer Reading Challenge and $10,000 to the Buffalo Library to buy financial literacy materials.
• Staten Island – Furnished rooms for three fire stations for the Fire Department of New York and donated $5,000 to the FDNY Foundation.
• Olean – Along with the mayor and council members, our co-workers hand delivered 14 to 16 pound turkeys and a $25 food gift card to 150 area families before Thanksgiving.
• Watertown – Donated 120 Hannaford Supermarket $50 gift cards to help military families at Fort Drum in need of assistance to purchase groceries.
• Bronx – The Association for Helping Retarded Children (AHRC) Greenberg and Mayflower residences received furniture such as bedroom sets, sofas, recliners, lamps, a desk, tables, hi-definition flat-screen TVs, a Playstation 3, a Nintendo Wii, DVD players and an entertainment center.
OHIO
• London – A Friend's Place, a domestic abuse agency, received a washer/dryer, bedroom set, Sony 46" HDTV and two Dell computers.
• Warren - Summit Academy, a school for children with special learning needs, received six computers and two HDTVs.
• Lima - The Red Cross received four desktop computers and two laptops for field work.
• Cincinnati - Children's Hospital Medical Center received two digital cameras, a new HDTV and 12 laptop computers in its expanded Bone and Marrow Transplantation unit.
• Cleveland - Central Catholic High School received two HDTVs, a washer/dryer and six portable air conditioners.
• Toledo - Adelante, a Latino Resource Center, received four desktop Compaq computers, one Toshiba laptop computer and five desks with chairs for their first computer lab.
• Wilmington - The Ohio Benefit Bank received six computers and six desks and will help people find jobs and available benefits in one location.
• Zanesville – Donated funds to buy a PA system and help furnish a concession stand for the Miracle League which created a baseball field for physically and mentally challenged youth.
• Canton – Trillium Family Solutions received 20 flat-screen computer monitors, a refrigerator, two microwaves and three TV/VCR/DVD combos.
• Dayton – The Oncology Unit at Miami Valley Hospital received leather recliners, lamps, sleeper chairs and an LCD TV with DVD to furnish six patient treatment rooms.
